My older boys usually took the school lunch, but for grade school they went to a parochial school, lunch was much better than in the public schools.  My daughter however, is a picky eater, and won't eat half (OK, maybe 3/4) of what they serve, so why pay for it?  She helps me pack her lunch every day.  Quite often it's sandwiches, either PB&J (whole grain bread, reduced fat PB), PB&Banana, or lean turkey or ham.  If she has a meat sandwich, she'll take some lettuce and a slice

  • Attitude Adjustment for me! Attitude Adjustment for me!

    • From: Chris728
    • Description:

Well, I am trying something new this week. A new outlook! I tend to focus on the negative a lot and get down easily when things are not going right or I am stressed. I am trying to be a bit more laid back this week and bring my stress level down which i think in turn will help my over eating ( I hope). I am going to the store today and plan on stocking up on fruits, veggies  and some more Smart Ones to keep me on track at lunch time. I have slacked off on exercise since I have been busy with back to school, home work and working. I am going to try to squeeze in the Wii fit today or a walk to get my metabolism going. I would like to lose 10 lbs by Thanksgiving, that seem like a very reasonable goal. I am going to visit some friends and relatives up North after Christmas and would like to have the weight off by then! Well enough for this week. Have a great week everyone and I hope to see some new blogs to read out there soon :)

Arthritis can be very painful sometimes I think I have it in my neck. I have not been diagnosed yet though. Anyway I would think walking would help the doctors always suggest exercise. I think the Wii would be helpful also in moderation. I know you said you dont swim but how about water aerobics? I heard that it is wonderful for arthritis. I took a class a few years ago and I really liked it :)

Those of you who are following me know I've been in a lot of pain. I finally found out (not surprisingly but oh so not happy) that I have arthritis. Does anyone else have it?

I really don't like reminders I am growing older. I always think I should be exempt somehow. LOL. However, I have a doctor who always told me 'this is your new reality' and that stuck with me really well.

So...in my New Reality, what do I need to think about? The site I read said jogging is not a good exercise for me

I am so with you on that, M Easy. We tend to put these things off or give them low priority but, when we do them, it feels so good!

Makes you wonder! Maybe we need a (non-food) reward system for every time we do something like walking or other daily exercise. Shall we make a list of ideas (again)? Can't be stressed enough!

I agree with you, Doingthis4Chris. You have to make it interesting and that's not an easy task. These days at least we have the internet so you can actually look up a seemingly infinite variety of school lunch ideas. I've found people on Twitter and Facebook who just push out messages with ideas for lunch! I love the internet!

Jamie Oliver did a great thing with his series. Has it made a difference? Don't know. I went to school in the UK and we had a cooked lunch every day (no choices, just what

I did see that show with Jamie Oliver. It was eye opening and sad that this country has such bad nutrition sometimes. I do remember a soda machine in my school also Ms S.O. I think times have changed and they at least do not allow sodas in schools. I cannot say as much for the Pizza and fries they serve though!

I think packing healthy lunches is the smartest way to go.  Schools offer too much fat-laden foods …pizza, fries, mac and cheese, fish sticks, nachos, tacos, wiener wraps, fried chicken, apple crisp, chocolate milk …you get the idea.  I’ve heard so

    • Description:

I think my friend is quitting Weight Watchers …she hasn’t mentioned it to me yet.  She made the statement to my darling daughter-in-law that she just ‘doesn’t have her head in it’ …I totally understand …and I know exactly what she’s saying.  I’ve been there.  I have gone to Weight Watcher’s when I really wasn’t ready and I didn’t think it was doing me any good … my head (and heart) just weren’t in it …but I went anyway … I know all too well what the consequences will be if I don’t go.

The reality of not going for me is weight gain …lots and lots of weight gain.  I know, this summer has been a battle …the same 2 pounds up and down …but I haven’t gained 100 pounds back!  I’ve kept most of it off, and I have to be proud of that fact, and confident that it will finally ‘click’ and I’ll be on the road to losing again.  I’m in the right place, and ‘the right time’ is just around the corner!

I realize that I’m not really ‘alone’ because I attend good sized class, with lots of enthusiastic participants.  The leader of the class is a real inspiration, too.  It’s just that I had someone going with me that I could talk to about our 'issues', and that I knew was going to be there, that would occasionally join me for a healthy breakfast after class.  Someone that was supportive outside of class as well (“Oh, Waaa” …I will stop my whining now!).

I’ve done it before on my own and I lived through it …I CAN DO THIS!  And we Weight Watcher’s know that almost everyone comes back …because it works!  And …I have no reason to whine …I have a great husband that is soooo supportive, a daughter-in-law that has lost over 30 pounds doing Weight Watchers (and looks amazing!), and close friends that I’ve known for years that attend classes in other areas that are hanging in there.

…so, I’ll just keep going and wait her out  …she’ll be back!

I agree SherW! The exercise is most important. that was one key factor that got my metabolism up. Even a short sprint around the block helps tremendously. I also like to keep plenty of the Smart ones around for lunch time to keep me on track. :)

Once I got going on one my metabolism sped up and the weight came off faster. Also, eat breakfast every day.. never skip that important meal. It gets your metabolism kickstarted for the day!

      Hello everyone,

I know...it has been along time.  I've been buried in school, work, and family stuff.  Some personal stuff that has completely overwhelmed my time this month.  August has been a very challenging month for me.  But, I am so happy and grateful to report that I am still on track with my new lifestyle of healthy eating ane exercising.  Inspite of everything I've had to face this month (mostly family issues), I have been able to maintain my weight and still get in my workouts.  Thank God for that!!  It is truly a miracle in itself.  I was working on my final paper for one of my classes and decided to take a break from everything and pop over to the Smart Ones Community.  I missed you guys so much!!  This is where I get my strength and motivation, so I just had to stop for a minute or two and see how everyone was doing.  I am catching up on everyone's blogs and feel good just seeing your names again.  :)

Power walking is still going on for me.  It really allows me to get out there and free my mind.  Yesterday, I did 4.044 miles in 50 minutes!!  I feel pretty good about that.  I am glad I've had to go through some of these challenges lately.  It has really been a test for me.  I didn't turn to food.  That is BIG deal for me.  It is easy to resist when things are going great, but when things are really bad and stressful and I can still stand up and say NO to food, then I know that my mind is in the right place now.  Instead, I walked more, I dug in deeper in my prayer life and I poured in time with my daughter.  I have new outlets now.  I am proud of that change in me.  I am a different person now.

One final note.....school is getting tougher as I get closer to the end.  I am finishing up this term with 2 A's again...miracle for sure.  I'll start my next term Sept. 14.  I am only taking 1 class and then another one in the Dec term.  Come Jan, I only have 5 more classes till graduation.....can you believe it?!  Whew....what a ride!!
